About Ken

Ken Verkler lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, and community. Born on February 3, 1948, Ken grew up splitting his time between the sun-soaked days of Southern California and his school years in Stamford, Connecticut. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from Bradley University, he made a trip to Los Angeles that would change his life forever—meeting JoAnn Hanly, the woman who would become his lifelong partner. Just a few months later, the two were married on August 17, 1969, beginning a partnership rooted in love, faith, and shared ambition.

After graduating, Ken and JoAnn settled in Solvang, California—JoAnn’s hometown—where Ken began working alongside his father-in-law, Bill Hanly, at Valley Hardware. Before long, Ken became the owner and driving force behind the store, turning it into far more than a place to buy supplies. Valley Hardware became a cornerstone of the community, known for its friendly atmosphere, reliable service, and the sense of belonging Ken fostered for employees and customers alike.

A true community leader, Ken served Solvang in many ways over the decades. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Solvang, served as both council member and mayor on the Solvang City Council, and sat on the founding board of Valley Oaks Bank—which would later merge with Montecito Bank and Trust, where Ken continued to serve as a trusted advisor. His dedication to service and his belief in local leadership helped strengthen the valley he loved.

Outside of work and public service, Ken coached Little League when his son was young, was an avid golfer, and took pride in his membership at the Alisal Golf Club and The Putter Boys.

Ken built a life with JoAnn—celebrating 55 years of marriage, raising two children, Ben and Teri, and enjoying the company of five grandchildren: Maddie, Soledad, Ethan, Ella, and Noah. His influence lives on through his family, his business, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and leadership.

Ken’s story is one of commitment—to family, to community, and to doing things the right way. His life continues to inspire others to lead with purpose, work hard, and give back.
